Cumbrian Chef James Hill Represents North West on Great British Menu 2025

Acclaimed Cumbrian chef James Hill has proudly represented the North West in the 2025 series of BBC Two’s Great British Menu - one of the UK’s most respected culinary competitions.

Known for his modern British cooking and passion for local ingredients, James brought his signature style and creativity to the national stage, competing alongside some of the best chefs in the country. His appearance on the show marked a career milestone and a proud moment for the region.

James’s journey to Great British Menu began years ago in the Lake District, training at the 3 Rosette Rampsbeck Hotel, before going on to work under Angela Hartnett at the Michelin-starred Connaught Hotel in London. Since then, he has led kitchens in Leeds, launched several standout restaurants in Carlisle, and earned multiple accolades—including 2 AA Rosettes and Michelin Guide recognition for Lounge on the Green.

In October 2024, James took on a new challenge by opening The Oak at Curthwaite, just west of Carlisle, where he continues to focus on seasonal, locally inspired dishes.

Speaking about the experience, James said:
"It was an honour to represent the North West. The standard was incredible, and I’m proud to have brought a little bit of Cumbria to the table."

With his appearance on Great British Menu, James Hill has firmly cemented his reputation as one of the region’s most exciting and dedicated chefs.
